Montrose

People: Admiral Richard Clark

Richard Clark a native of Montrose, commanded the 5 Swedish ships during the capture of Riga in 1621, was the founder of the Swedish noble family of Klerck.

Two of his nephews also became Admirals in the Swedish navy and another became Baron Hans Clark (or Klerck).

He gifted a candelabra from Gothenburg to Montrose Parish Church and it can still be seen there. There are other examples of gifts to Montrose churches from expatriates in Sweden (the gates of the church of St Mary and St Peter came from Gothenburg in the 1720s) and, indeed, of other Montrosians, such as John, laird of Usan, achieving positions of power there.
