Arbroath Harbour: Herring Gutting

As this picture from ca. 1890?? shows, gutting herring was an extremely messy business. The girls who did the work wore old clothes protected by an oilskin-bibbed apron.

As Margaret King points out in her article on fisher dress, adornment was not completely forgotten, the girl on the left has velvet ribbon sewn down either side of the front of her blouse. This is an example of one of the two types of traditional blouse worn by fishwives, the 'short goon' (the other being the 'sprigget blouse'). It was made of heavy cotton and lined with cotton ticking for warmth. It often had fancy pintucks on the button-through front and other embellishments would include mother-of-pearl buttons.
