TAMH: Trading Ports

Stavanger in the 17th century

(Stavanger, Norway)

Although there was some trade between Stavanger itself and Tayside most of the 'Skottahandelen' was as a result of Scottish skippers dealing directly with the farmers in the Ryfylke region, bartering grain for timber, and avoiding any custom dues in Stavanger. During this 'Skottatida', from ca 1500 up until 1717, when Stavanger successfully imposed a ban on foreign vessels sailing up the fjords to trade, three quarters of the Scottish ships came from Tayside and Fife.
