TAMH: Trading Ports

Tonsberg in the 19th century

(Tønsberg, Norway)

Tonsberg which sits at the head of Tonsbergfjorden is the oldest town in Norway and has been a major trading port since the 9th century. Like most of the Norway trade, it was important for Tayside skippers in that they came here, dealt directly with the local farmers in buying timber (usually in exchange for cereal) and avoided paying any customs dues on the transaction. It later became a major whaling port.
